Brecon is a market town which is famed for its ancient Cathedral, its Georgian architecture and its Jazz Festival (held annually in August).
This is a town where you'll enjoy losing yourself...not only in the narrow streets and passageways lined with Georgian and Jacobean shopfronts, but in the sense of timelessness about the place.
In 1797 work began on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal to link Brecon with Newport. A magnificent stone aqueduct carries the canal across the River Usk just outside town. Currently 37 miles of canal has been restored to award winning standards. The Monmouth and Brecon canal hugs the mountainside above the valley of the river Usk. Throughout the year there are fine views and an abundance of wildlife to be seen. The 2.5 hours cruise takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in Britain lying within the BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK.
The canal starts at the Brecon weir on the River Usk. The purpose of the weir is to channel water that will feed the canal. From this point the water runs under the town of Brecon through a pipe for almost a mile. The water is first seen at the Theatre Basin. Over recent years the area has been redeveloped and provides pleasant moorings with a backdrop of the Theatre Brycheiniog.
Brecon Jazz Festival is held on an annual basis in the rural surroundings of Brecon in Powys, Wales, and it is host to a range of jazz musicians who travel from across the world to take part.
Now in its 25th year, the Brecon Jazz festival creates a unique magic for both its audience, and the galaxy of international artists who perform there. The 2008 festival starts on Friday 8 until Sunday 10 August, and mixes some of the world’s finest jazz music with the stunning location of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Festival Car Park is clearly signposted from the A40 and A470, all parking is within reasonable distance of venues. A Festival Car Park pass is available to purchase in advance from the Box Office up to August 4. After this date passes may be bought in person on arrival at the festival. There is a frequent bus shuttle service from the Festival Car Park to the town centre. WhereWhenWales offers TRANSPORT for groups between 8-16 passengers.
